The London Bike Cafe informs us that "the Ontario Government has introduced a Bill into the Legislature (Bill 282 An Act in respect of various road safety matters), better known by its catchy title “The Moving Ontarians More Safely (MOMS) Act.” The MOMS Act will regulate e-bike and cargo bike use across the province."
In some ways, the MOMS Act is an improvement on existing e-bike law, but it seems that the government may accidentally make your e-bike or cargo bike illegal.
You can take action via the London Bike Cafe. They will be deputing before provincial parliament and are asking for your support.
Though I'm not surprised that the government is struggling with their definitions, as I pointed out in my last post, I'm surprised that it needs to come forward as legislation. I thought it was just going to be new regulations. So all the more reason that the government needs to get this right. There are a lot of people in Ontario who already own these bikes and businesses are built in them. It's especially frustrating since there's already a pretty good classification system for e-bikes in many North American jurisdictions that would be easy to adopt.
